Masonic Education - January 2018
In this portion of our website, I will present various articles that I hope readers will find interesting and educational. Hopefully a new one each (calendar) month. Most, if not all articles will not be my own creation, so I will indicate my source of information. Should I depart from or add to the original script, I will indicate in brackets [ ]. As some of the entries on a website are done in ''code'', there may be slight variations from the original script which I may not indicate in the brackets.
At the December Meeting of Nickel Lodge; our Worshipful Master, W. Bro. John Reynolds presented some Masonic Education with regard to the number Forty and Two Thousand as the "Work" of the evening was a Passing. He read this excerpt to give the brethren something to ponder:
Masonic Matters - Forty and Two Thousand
by Ed Halpaus
Grand Lodge Education Officer
Grand Lodge of A. F. & A. M. of Minnesota on or before March 22, 2014
"The number forty is in itself symbolic.[ii] The number 40 is made up of two important numbers; four and ten, because of this the number 40 was considered sacred. Ancient philosophers considered the numbers 4 and 10 significant. "The number one represented one God the Creator; two was the passive principle, matter on which God, the active principle, acted; three represented the effect of the union of one and two; and four represented the arts and sciences. The addition of the first four numbers gives ten, which was the perfection of all things."[iii]
It is accepted by metaphysical bible scholars that the number forty means sufficient / completeness:[iv] Thus when in the story of Jephthah and the Ephraimites, the use of the number forty and two thousand simply means that there was a sufficient number of Ephraimites killed for complete victory."
I provide the above for review by the Brethren in attendance and for the benefit of those who were not.
